Upper School

The Upper School offers a culminating experience to an MCDS college-preparatory education. Students continue to develop independence of thought and action, reflected in seminar-style classes and increasing autonomy in student learning. Through a carefully sequenced program our college advisor guides students to successfully apply to the institution that best matches their skills and goals. Recently accredited as an IB World School, MCDS will offer students in the class of 2010 and beyond the opportunity to participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, an internationally recognized pre-university program.  Click Here for more information on the IB Diploma Programme.  Completing the Upper School curriculum in each subject area prepares students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in college prerequisites:

  • English classes combine the study of classic literature with the study of how to structure arguments and clearly present one’s ideas in a compelling style.
  • The History curriculum presents an overview of World and US history followed by in-depth study of 20th Century topics.
  • In Math, students culminate their study of algebra, geometry, trigonometry with calculus topics
  • The Science curriculum is carefully sequenced, so students use foundational knowledge in Physics (9th Grade) and Chemistry (10th Grade) to study Biology (11th and 12th Grades).
  • Students may choose between Japanese and Spanish for their foreign language requirement, developing reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills to communicate effectively in a second language.
  • Students are offered choices in Art and Music to encompass a range of abilities, from the serious performer to novice who seeks enjoyment.
  • Physical education is also offered to develop the fitness and health of all students.

As students learn the foundational knowledge in each academic discipline, the Upper School experience provides them with overarching skills. Through their education, Upper School students learn to write well, research information, and persist with challenging assignments, along with other habits of mind necessary for higher education.

Many opportunities exist outside the classroom to enrich our students’ lives. An advisory program helps guide students to academic success, with one-on-one advising ensuring that every student has a faculty advocate. Field trips and guest speakers provide students with varied experiences and perspectives. A variety of extracurricular and elective opportunities engage our students’ intellectual, artistic, and athletic talents. Our inclusive policy ensures that everybody who wants to sing, act, and play has the opportunity to do so. MCDS expects students to take responsibility for their education and assume leadership in each activity, building self-confidence and character through accomplishment.
